Vitamin C Deficiency Support

Ascorbic acid, or Vitamin C, may be prescribed to reduce the risk of or support vitamin C deficiency. Extremely low levels of vitamin C can cause a condition known as scurvy. Symptoms of scurvy may include rash or brown spots on the skin, muscle weakness, pale skin, joint pain, tiredness, depression, or tooth loss.

Ascorbic acid is important because it helps maintain the health of skin, teeth, cartilage, bone, and blood vessels.

Overview

Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in many physiological functions, including maintaining the health of skin, teeth, bone, cartilage, and blood vessels. It is an essential nutrient, meaning the body cannot synthesize it and it must be obtained through diet or supplementation.

Vitamin C is found naturally in many fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits, kiwi, broccoli, tomatoes, leafy vegetables, potatoes, brussels sprouts, raw bell peppers, and strawberries. Most people get sufficient vitamin C through diet, but some patients may not absorb enough through food or oral supplements. In these cases, ascorbic acid injections may be considered.

What Is Ascorbic Acid?

Ascorbic acid is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals can contribute to oxidative stress and are associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain cancers, and some neurological disorders.

Vitamin C also plays a vital role in collagen synthesis. Collagen is a protein found in connective tissues, skin, blood vessels, and bones, and is essential for wound healing, healthy skin, and the structure of body tissues.

Ascorbic acid helps with the absorption of dietary iron, especially non-heme iron from plant-based foods, by converting it into a more absorbable form. This can be especially important for people following vegetarian or vegan diets.

Immune and Wellness Support

Vitamin C is well known for its role in supporting the immune system. It helps support the production and function of white blood cells, which are important for fighting infections and pathogens. Ascorbic acid also supports the activity of other antioxidants in the body.

Vitamin C has been associated with several potential wellness benefits, including support for cardiovascular health, age-related macular degeneration risk reduction, certain cancer-related supportive care discussions, inflammation balance, and brain health support. These uses should be reviewed with a healthcare provider based on individual health needs.

Precautions and Side Effects

Before using ascorbic acid, speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have known allergies, kidney disease or kidney stones, diabetes, are taking blood thinners, follow a sodium-restricted diet, or have G6PD deficiency.

Ascorbic acid is generally considered safe during pregnancy when taken at recommended doses. Higher doses should only be used when clearly needed and discussed with a healthcare provider. Vitamin C passes into breast milk and is considered safe during breastfeeding when used appropriately.

Ascorbic acid may affect certain lab tests, including some blood sugar tests, potentially causing inaccurate results. Tell your healthcare provider and lab technician if you are taking vitamin C.

Stop using ascorbic acid and call your doctor right away if you experience painful urination, pink or bloody urine, or signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. Common side effects may include nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
